Everything makes more sense when you are wearing a tutu.
I've had some people, usually tourists, approach me on the streets of New York saying "I would never get away with what you're wearing if I were to wear that back home." Usually the conversation ensues about where aforementioned human is from, etc. Usually the human says something along the lines of "people would stare like I had three heads if I were to attempt that look..." and I never know whether they intend it as a compliment or an insult, but I always take it as the former. Don't get me wrong, I'm never dressed like Lady Gaga, but I always try to wear something out of the ordinary at least once a week - example A. a tutu. And don't get me wrong, people will sometimes stare, or make comments, but in reality who cares. There's so many people in New York, and everyone is unabashedly who they are, so while I'm wearing a tutu theres another person 10 steps behind me in a sequin wig. It makes getting dressed fun. And I think that while New York seems intimidating to a lot of people, if you look at it this way its actually much more inviting. I hope that when people make those types of comments to me, about being able to "get away" with wearing it, they actually have a change of heart after our conversation, because life is way to short not to wear a tutu just because you feel like wearing a tutu.
